Bringing together a distinguished international consortium

on a mission to transform COPD patient care

Dedicated to developing a cutting-edge portable breathalyser with an innovative clinical workflow, that can provide real-time, non-invasive, at-home patient monitoring. Allowing for the early prediction of exacerbations in patients living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with the goal to transform COPD patient care. BreathSense brings together a distinguished international consortium of renowned academic institutions, medical research organisations, technology experts and innovative SME’s to transform COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patient care.

Within this consortium the LUMC is represented both by the department Public Health and Primary Care (PHEG) and the National eHealth Living Lab (NeLL). The PHEG focuses on all aspects of population health. NeLL is specialized in co-developing and implementing innovative eHealth products and interventions with the end-users.

The King’s Centre for Lung Health (KCLH) brings together expertise across the Respiratory Sciences (e.g. Biology, Immunology, Infection, Pharmacology, Physiology, Imaging, and Clinical Trials) across the interface of Lung Disease (some examples include Asthma, COPD, ILD). We strive to be inclusive, with a vision to eliminate lung disease by prevention, early diagnosis and better treatments.

RespiQ is developing a breakthrough AI-enhaced breathalyser for real-time, non-invasive health monitoring solution COPD patients can easily use themselves at home. Clinicians can remotely review patients’ data which will allow for earlier medical intervention with the aim to prevent COPD lung attacks.

μRoboptics is a Portuguese SME that provides specialized technical consulting services in technology development for medical applications and products. The company successfully participated in four European grants aiming at development of innovative medical technologies and is recognized by the national authority (ANI) as a reputed entity for R&D of information technologies in the industrial and medical domains.

SINTEF is the largest independent R&D organization in the Nordic countries. The BioMEMS and Medical Sensors Group at SINTEF Digital specializes in design and manufacturing of bio diagnostic devices and miniaturized biosensors.

What the partners say…

“Receiving the EIC Pathfinder grant marks a significant milestone for our company and consortium, as it enables us to accelerate the development of our cutting-edge breath diagnostics device, bringing hope to thousands of COPD patients struggling to monitor their disease."

- Mira Gleisberg, CEO of respiQ

“The BreathSense EIC Pathfinder project is an opportunity for μRoboptics to continue its work as a medical device manufacturer, together with other European hospitals, research institutes and companies. It also allows to further expand its knowledge and technical expertise in design, integration and manufacturing of electronics and embedded circuit devices.”

- Luís Tavares, Managing Partner of μRoboptics

“This impact of this funding will be potentially game-changing. Ways to diagnose onset of deterioration in COPD are urgently warranted. With a non-invasive test like a breath test, this could mean that in the future patients living with COPD will be able to safely monitor their condition without the need for a trip to hospital. As the clinical partner for this project, we look forward to the advancements this funding will allow our research to achieve for COPD patients in the future.”

- Professor Mona Bafadhel, Chair of Respiratory Medicine; Director of the King’s Centre for Lung Health at King’s College London

“We are thrilled to engage in this project where, together with the patient and healthcare provider, we will co-create an optimal workflow for seamless integration of this cutting-edge technology into existing COPD healthcare management. Our ultimate goal is to enhance patient care and outcomes, and together make a significant impact with this wonderful consortium.”

- Team Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)

“This EIC Pathfinder project is an exhilarating milestone for us at SINTEF MiNaLab. Given our passion for medical technology and its societal impact, we are extremely honoured to have the opportunity to collaborate with an exceptional consortium that shares our vision.”

- Elizaveta Vereshchagina, Senior Research Scientist, SINTEF Digital
